Wake up to the expansive views and native fauna, enjoy your own locally sourced eggs, bacon and continental extras. The day begins with a majestic walk in to “The Gorge”. At over 600 million years old, the Onkaparinga Gorge beautifully reveals the geology which makes the region’s wine and food so special.
Now, being intimately familiar with the region’s geology, run your hands along the walls of one of Australia’s most iconic wineries. Stroll Wirra Wirra’s historic ironstone cellars & winery and have a crack at ringing the Angelus Bell – the instrument used to call the entire region to the new vintage initiate every vintage. A visit perfectly wrapped up with a private tasting in the old Original Cellar Door.
With the juices flowing, it’s off to The Salopian Inn. Named in Tasting Australia’s Top Australian Restaurants, enjoy a lunch of truly awesome modern Australian cuisine.
Situated in a quintessential 1850’s Aussie homestead, the amazing food is complimented by the expansive vineyard views and roaring winter fires. Chef Owner Karena Armstrong is an absolute gun, with the credentials to match, having served extensive stints at many globally celebrated restaurants including Napa Valley’s The French Laundry and Icebergs in Sydney’s Bondi Beach.
Nicely sated, it’s time to pique your other senses and drop in to Bekkers, one of the regions’ most prestigious fine wine producers. Join the owners, Toby or Emmanuelle Bekkers, and experience the product of soil and soul. Enjoy a private tasting in the luxurious tasting room overlooking the estate in the dress circle of McLaren Vale. These wines are truly stunning, cellar-worthy specimens for any officianado.
Nipping back to the Vineyard Retreat you’ll have some quiet time to relax on the deck or in front of your crackling wood fire with a complimentary mini-bar.
The evening begins with a scenic helicopter ride to the ultimate Fleurieu lookout. Here, with views across the Gulf of St. Vincent to Kangaroo Island, you‘ll sit down for a sunset dinner at the farm of Coast & Co. owner Simon Burley. The site, built high on a hill, is the perfect spot to enjoy a stunning BBQ with wine from Simon’s private collection.
Blown away by your day, you’ll gently return to your guesthouse to slip in between the 1200 thread count sheets on your King size bed for a restful, dreamy sleep.
A new day dawns over the tapestry of vineyards outside your door, awakening your creativity. Breakfast at a local art gallery, followed by private tour of their indigenous art collection.
Now, get ready for a day of hedonistic pleasure at the avant-garde, Rubik’s Cube inspired, d‘Arenberg Cube.
